Science World in Vancouver – A Beacon of Science, Learning & Wonder
Science World is one of Vancouver’s most iconic institutions, combining science, technology, and creative learning in an engaging, interactive environment. It stands proudly at the edge of False Creek under its striking geodesic dome, a structure originally built for the Expo 86 World’s Fair.
History & Architecture
Originally called the Expo Centre, the building was designed by architect Bruno Freschi and served as a central pavilion during Expo 86. The geodesic dome design was inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller, symbolizing futuristic innovation.
Although it was meant to be temporary, public and governmental support helped transform it into a permanent science museum. It officially opened as Science World on May 6, 1989.
Mission & Purpose
Operated by the non-profit ASTC Science World Society, its mission is to inspire science and technology learning across British Columbia. It promotes STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) through:

OMNIMAX Theatre
The OMNIMAX Theatre, with a 27-metre domed screen and 400-seat capacity, presents science-based documentaries in stunning immersive format.
After Dark Events
Science World also organizes “After Dark” – evening events for adults only, with science demos, music, drinks, and talks in a lively atmosphere.
